Tri-State Fence & Deck installed a 6-foot vinyl privacy fence for a homeowner in Sewell, NJ, on a yard with enough natural slope that a fence set to a single fixed height would have either floated above the low ground or buried itself in the high ground. Instead of setting posts straight to one height, the crew graded the line progressively, post by post, to follow the land the way it actually sits.
It's a step that looks unfinished mid-install — and Tri-State's crew addressed that head-on in the project video, walking through exactly why the posts look uneven partway through the job and what that means for keeping a dog from finding a gap at the bottom once the fence is done.
Every post on this job was set, leveled, and made plumb on its own. That part isn't up for debate. What changes, post to post, is how high each one sits relative to the last, and that's deliberate. Setting the whole line to one fixed height across a sloped yard leaves a wide gap at the bottom wherever the ground dips, which is exactly the opening a dog is going to find and use.
Instead, Tri-State's crew works the grade in sections, starting from one end and setting each new post a little lower than the one before it as the ground drops. Mid-installation, that makes the top of the fence look like it's riding a roller coaster. But that is only because the line isn't finished yet.
By the time the whole run is graded, the height differences smooth out into a fence that follows the slope cleanly, with the bottom edge sitting close to the ground the entire way instead of just at the high points.
Rather than setting every post to one fixed height, the crew steps the line down gradually to match the slope, avoiding both a stair-step look and a fence that floats above low ground.
Grading the posts lower as the line progresses closes the gap at the bottom of the fence, addressing the single most common concern homeowners raise before installation: a dog finding a way underneath.
Every post is checked plumb in both directions before the crew moves to the next one — the height varies intentionally by design, but the vertical alignment of each post does not.
